He has also been the resident director of Broadway Unplugged since 2016. Brad has loved being part of this show, reminiscing of his time living in New York, and hopes this blueprint for inclusive casting and storytelling beginning ripples that will one day become waves.

He’ll have to deal with his uncle’s unusual will terms and all the other people after his money. Our Vision While this show is very melodramatic and leans into a lot of tropes, we don't want it to feel fake or cheesy. We want our actors to lean in to the truth of their characters, the heightened nature of the story, as after all the truth is funny. Honest discovery, observation, and reaction is better than contrived invention. Real humour does not come from sacrificing the reality of a moment in order to crack a cheap joke, but in finding the joke in the reality of the moment. Casting Continuing with our traditions of open casting, each actor will be chosen for their personal abilities rather than them being the 'perfect fit' for the role. Every role will be open to every performer. We are limited by the rights by the gender expressions of each character, though this will not limit our imagination as to who is able to play each role. If you are passionate about a character but unsure if the actor fits, we encourage them to give it their best shot! • Be New | Be You

Developing and nurturing new Australian works of music theatre We imagine a thriving new works community here in Melbourne. There are so many talented artists and stories, and we shouldn’t have to import our stories to make theatre. Be New wants to see this world into existence and create the platforms to make this happen. 2024 Program What is Be New? Currently, there are very few spaces for artists to develop their work to be in a position to get their shows out to a wider audience. Australia has so many talented writers, whose stories aren’t being heard because there simply aren’t many frameworks to support these stories to grow. Writing is an iterative process, therefore Be New is focussed on the journey rather than the destination. We will be here to provide objective feedback and the tools to test your work in a low-stakes environment so you are equipped to succeed. It can be challenging as an emerging writer to know how to get from a first concept draft to a fully realised show. All too often, new shows in Australia jump directly from writing to staging and are subsequently forgotten. These new works have great potential but lack polish, and this creates obstacles for producers picking up the show at any point in the future. Using a Broadway model of workshopping as a guide, we hope to create an intermediate step between having a concept or short excerpt and having a full, marketable show. Here the focus isn’t on the staging but on the story, so there is time to play with your story and see where it takes you. There’s no rush, no deadline in having to have a full production ready. The focus is all on you. Through Be New we want to create a flourishing community of writers, who feel empowered to share their stories, and provide the tools to get their works out there. We think this is not only great for writers, but turns the spotlight on the incredible stories that Australian artists have to share. The Be New Writing Workshop The Be New Writing Workshop is a program focusing on writing and crafting the story that you want to tell. 3-hour sessions once a week Collaboration with creatives and mentors (two different works will be included in the program, with teams or individuals at the helm). The opportunity for table reads and stand-and-sing sessions. How Can I Get Involved? Sign up to our Instagram page to stay informed. What Do We Ask of You? Writers, bring us your stories and ideas! We’re looking for full (90-min+) shows to workshop and develop over the course. Obviously, these don’t need to be complete works (that’s what we’re here to help you with), but this program is designed for creatives who already have formed concepts and ideally some existing material. Musical theatre shows only; unfortunately we aren’t catering to other performance types or cabaret shows. Perks of the Program Meet other writers and form a writer’s circle, where you can share ideas, and get feedback on your own work. Multiple opportunities to have your work read and sung aloud at table-read style events; We think it is important and valuable to hear your words spoken by living, breathing people, giving you more concrete information about how your show lands. In depth one-on-one feedback from objective parties about your writing and advice on how to develop it. Workshop style discussions on tools for writing to provide alternate perspectives to help hone your craft. Once the workshop is complete you’ll have the opportunity to show your work to the public, in an open, table-read style event to generate interest in your work and to celebrate the evolution of your show.

Two contrasting songs (one that you feel really shows storytelling and one that you find challenging). Each song should be a maximum of 32 bars/one minute each. There is no issue great or small that we won’t help with, so please reach out to Brendan or through the form. Audition Form More information / FAQs WHO ARE WE? Be You is a person-centred organisation, with it’s only mandate being to empower performers. We believe empowerment is the process of becoming stronger and more confident through developing a positive sense of self and being provided with the resources required to succeed. WHY ARE WE DOING THIS? We see so many talented people out there in the industry who are just waiting to catch a break. We’ve seen how those with degrees from certain schools are more likely to get in the room, and we spent a while looking in to the reasons this happens by interviewing people from all levels of the industry. O ne thing consistently came up: talent is not really that important, what IS important is the skills that lie in between. Preparation, Communication, Wellbeing. These three skills aren’t being taught outside of the schools (often not even within) and without these skills, it’s hard for casting agents to assess you from an application to audition, let alone to then successfully audition and hit rehearsals with a professional attitude, self-awareness, and self-confidence. Your journey is infinite, and we wish to use our resources to instil this infinite mindset in our cast. You can go many places to learn how to sing, dance, and act – we’re interested in developing the spaces in between. HOW WILL AUDITIONS WORK? To align with our values, we will be running a person-centred casting process. This will feel odd to some people, as we’re basing our audition approach on finding out who you are, where you need to go, if we’re able to help you get there, and the non-talent-related outcomes that you would benefit from. The first step is to fill out our application form which we’re using to learn about you while we see you for an audition. We’ll use your response to understand what’s important to you from the moment you apply, and what you feel you need to be provided to be empowered. Our curriculum is being provided with our application form. We’ll use these responses to begin prioritising the parts of each pillar, Preparation, Communication, and Wellbeing, to home in on exactly what you’re interested in pursuing. If you meet our criteria of being someone we feel will benefit from being cast in the showcase, we’ll invite you to an interview. The interview will be an informal chat about your application and your desired within the industry. After this, the panel will discuss what we’ve seen throughout the process from everyone and decide on who we would like to offer an opportunity to within the cast. HOW WILL WE DECIDE THE STRUCTURE? Once we have a cast, Brad will meet with everyone individually to talk about your needs and goals and ideas, take that away and develop a plan of action based on everyone’s needs. This process allows us to be focused on the needs of the individuals and group we have. We believe the best way to empower people is to meet them where they are and foster growth from there, rather than telling you what you all need and trying to make you fit our mould. You have your own story, and that story is the one we’re most passionate about telling. We’re not asking for specific mentors before we cast as this group may not require the skills that a mentor is there to teach. We don’t want to waste anyone’s time in providing you with anything you won’t benefit from. We’ll use our connections through Broadway Unplugg ed to find mentors that suit the needs of our cohort. In our initial introductory rehearsal, we'll roll out your specialised curriculum, talk about the mentors we've asked to come and help and have a plan for how the whole process will run.

WHAT PEOPLE SAY I gained a greater understanding of music theory as a whole, but also some little tricks and tips to make sight reading easier and how to locate clues in the music We were presented with a great well rounded amount of information regarding basic music theory which was a great refresher. The visual of Daniele writing the music notation at the same time as explaining the theory was beneficial.
