  • Lucky Stiff Auditions | Be You Productions

Audition Application Apply Now Be You Productions is excited to announce our 2023 production of Lucky Stiff to be staged in August at the MC Showroom. Link to a Plain Text Version of this brief. We are now seeking TEN cast members for a paid opportunity through ethical profit share . Lucky Stiff is the heartwarming tale of a man, a corpse, and a whole lot of money. Harry Witherspoon, a down-on-his-luck shoe salesman, inherits a fortune from his dead uncle, but there's a catch: he has to drag the old man's embalmed body to Monte Carlo for one last hurrah. Along the way, Harry finds love, adventure, and the true meaning of family (even if it's with a deceased relative). With hilarious songs, outrageous plot twists, and a cast of unforgettable characters, Lucky Stiff reminds us that even the weirdest situations can lead to unexpected beauty. So come for the laughs, stay for the heartwarming message, and don't forget your danci ng shoes! OUR VISION This show is quirky and fun, with poignant moments - we want to work with people who can lean into the contrasting aspects of the show, whilst enjoying ourselves. While this show can be very melodramatic and lean into stereotypes, we think with the right amount of sincerity it will not feel fake or cheesy. We want our actors to lean into the truth of their characters, the heightened nature of the story, as after all the truth is funny. Honest discovery, observation, and reaction is better than contrived invention. Real humour does not come from sacrificing the reality of a moment in order to crack a cheap joke, but in finding the joke in the reality of the moment. CASTING PHILOSOPHY At Be You, we hold open auditions, which means each performer will be chosen for their personal abilities. Every role is open to every performer, regardless of traditional ‘fit’ for the role. The rights of the musical prescribe the gender expressions of each character, though this does not limit our imagination as to w ho is able to play each role. If you are passionate about a character but unsure if you fit as an actor, we encourage you to give it a shot! PAYM EN T We use an Ethical Profit Share model to pay our people for their work. For this production profits will be shared equally between all members of the cast and creative team, excluding Bradley, Daniele, John, and Weng Yi, who are volunteers. WHO WE AR E LOOKING FOR People who are not afraid to have fun and experiment in a safe environment People who want to be part of the creation of the show People who display emotional intelligence, authenticity, and a passion for acting. People with an open, playful attitude where storytelling is concerned People who will adhere to our values and be excited to embark on this new adventure in creating sustainable theatre. People who care - we don’t need exceptional singers or dancers, we need passionate actors and storytellers. People who have the ability to work in Australia, and live in Victoria. CASTING NOTES We are proud of our diverse community and want to ensure people feel welcome to be considered for any of the positions available. Growing up in Adelaide, Gemma followed in her family’s footsteps by learning the clarinet at the age of six. Training in classical singing, she discovered the world of music theatre in her tweens. She first found her love for cabaret in the Class of Cabaret program during the 2017 Adelaide Cabaret Festival, directed by Eddie Perfect and Ali McGregor. At 18 Gemma kissed the Malls Balls goodbye to begin her formal training at Federation University Arts Academy in Ballarat, where she earned a Bachelor of Music Theatre. Here she stepped into the shoes of some incredible characters including Maggie Holmes in Working, Donna Wright in Shane Warne the Musical, and Diana Morales in A Chorus Line. During her time at Uni Gemma thrived in the collaborative environment, honing her cabaret and creation skills. She used her time in lockdown write cabarets and work with her peers on upcoming projects. [Title of Show] is Gemma’s debut performance in Melbourne and she feels immensely lucky to bring Susan to life on stage. Gemma would like to thank her high school drama teachers, her partner, and Julie Andrews. Before the little old Global Pandemic, Kathleen (she/her) returned from the US where she performed in numerous shows including Carol in a one-night-only Production of Split: At Home in New York. She toured the role of Annette in Saturday Night Fever the Musical and was Lead Arial Vocalist in the Cirque De Soleil inspired In the Air twice for Broadway at Sea (RCI). Other Australian stage credits include Bad Idea Bear in Avenue Q (Trifle Theatre), Miss Gardner in Carrie: The Musical (Ghost Light/Moving Light), Marcia Brady in A Very Brady Cabaret (StageArt), Barbie: Anything is Possible (Lifelike Touring) and The Songs of Ahrens and Flaherty (Flourish Productions). She’s also played Columbia in Rocky Horror Tribute Show, Frenchy in Grease Lightinin’ and Elphaba (of Wicked) in The Broadway Tribute Show (Event Theatre International). Kathleen started her journey as an enthusiastic pre-teen appearing on your TV box, in numerous TV shows such as Chris Lille’s Mr G, Neighbours, Blue Heelers and various TVC’s. When she thinks back to that time, starting out, wide eyed and full of absolute joy - after the year that has been, she hopes we all find ‘A Way Back to Then’ whatever that may mean for you. Before spending most of the last two years waking up at midday on a steady diet of Easy Mac and misery, Noah (he/they) studied at the Victorian College of the Arts for a Bachelor of Fine Arts (Music Theatre). Whilst at the VCA, they appeared as Ozzie in On The Town, as a featured soloist in Morning Melodies in 2018 and 2019, and in the ensemble of Flora, The Red Menace. He was also the proud winner of the Songs in Isolation Singing Competition in 2020, judged by Michael Feinstein. Noah’s love of art began with the screen, and as well as making their screen debut this year in the role of Seth Okaine on Neighbours, they also enjoy developing and directing their own short horror films. Noah is thrilled to be telling this story that celebrates the brave (and frequently illogical) choice to commit (AND recommit, AND recommit) to a life in the arts; it is a choice of self love and self respect against a world that wants to deny your authenticity at every turn. Noah dedicates this performance to all the dreamers and theatre dorks who choose to be LOUD. Obed (he/him) first found his passion for performance in the tried and true fashion; Playing a humble student in a schools production of ‘Les Miserables’. With eyes set on one day being worthy of Jean Valjean or donning the alluring half mask of the Phantom, he trained in the Music Theatre Studio and a Bachelor of Musical Theatre at the Victorian College of the Arts and took up every available opportunity; Ensemble members in ‘Morning Melodies’ and ‘On the Town’, Choir Master/Callum in ‘Our House’ and Reverend Crisparkle/Piano 2 in ‘The Mystery of Edwin Drood’. Finally out in the industry in the wild party that was 2021, Obed was gratefully dancing through life in pieces such as Random Acts’ ‘Billie and the Outback Dinosaurs’ and continued training through Action Drama Studio’s ‘Advanced Screen Acting’ course, ‘The Cate’. Through Obed’s artistic journey however, he’s come to discover the value of his work lies not in the glory of the musical ‘giants’ (“I wish!”) but in the immense power of storytelling to heal, encourage and inspire. Obed hopes that through [Title of Show], you will be reconnected with the true source of joy, inspiration, encouragement and hope. To Him be the glory... After completing her Bachelor of Music Theatre at Federation University in 2019, Sarah (she/her) has gone on to work broadly in Melbourne’s theatre scene, taking part in workshops, script readings, and touring nationally with children’s theatre company Alpha Shows in The Little Mermaid. As well as this, Sarah also co-hosted the monthly revue Mixed Bag at Club Voltaire where she featured artists and her own original songs and writing, collaborated on with Sol Summers. Sol and Sarah have also collaborated on multiple cabarets such as Chaos the Cabaret and A Manic Pixie Dream Cabaret. Sarah’s directing credits include The Dam, The Silent War and more recently was assistant director on the new Australian musical Voyagers. Sarah is passionate about the development of Australian voices and talent and is thrilled to be working with the team on [Title of Show]. Sol (he/him) is a Melbourne-based music director and performer. Studying a bachelor of music theatre at Federation University in Ballarat, Sol became acutely interested in music, acting as music director and accompanist for Reasons, a fundraiser in his third year. Since then, Sol has continued working with Federation University, as assistant music director on Exquisite Corpse, with the graduating class of 2021. Sol’s passion is to make music more accessible for performers of all types, and to share his love of music through collaboration. Brendan (he/him) is a Casting & Communications professional, and passionate performer with experience in many areas of the industry. His performance journey includes music theatre productions, dancing around the world on cruise ships, as well as working with contemporary and commercial dance companies. A proud member of the Be You Inc Operations team he strives for an industry of empowered performers and creatives and aims to promote a more diverse inclusive industry in his roles as Casting Director and Head of Communications. As an advocate for supportive environments in what can be a tough industry, Brendan always strives to challenge stigma, create opportunities and share insight through experience. With an interest in also supporting the journeys of performers as an agent, Brendan has joined the team at Helen Pandos Management. After casting [title of show] earlier this year, Brendan was more than happy to jump on as resident choreographer when Director of Movement Georgina moved interstate. Born into a family of classical musicians, Georgina stumbled over her own two feet into dance classes and then ran away with the circus in her teens. Completing her Advanced Diploma in Music Theatre at Principal Academy (Perth) and her Certificate at WAAPA. Georgina moved to Melbourne in 2013 and while working as a professional dancer, she studied Meisner in 2016 and continued her dance training at Spectrum Dance in 2017. Professionally Georgina has danced internationally, and alongside Sheppard The Band & Tom Burlinson. Theatre credits; Swing/Dance Captain in Voldemort and the Teenage Hogwarts Musical Parody (Salty Theatre), ensemble/understudy in Nine The Musical (StageArt), Bombalurina in CATS (ICW Productions), ensemble in Cinderella Pantomime (Zealous Productions), ensemble in Bootlegged Musical (Red Bennies), and she was a Semi Finalist for the Rob Guest Endowment 2018. As a creative, Georgina has written, directed, and choreographed short musical revues for her students, and choreographed for corporate entertainment. She is excited to share her choreography for Title of Show. She’d also like to thank her agency Central Melbourne Talent for their support. Weng Yi (she/her) brings to the musical theatre industry a diverse background and skillset. She is a law graduate, literature major, former editor, and experienced paralegal, having worked across several different practice areas with further qualifications and expertise in intellectual property law. Another hat (or rather, helmet) she wears is as an equestrian, competing predominantly in the sport of dressage. Balancing the demands of this lifestyle has enabled her to develop strengths in organisation, management, and creative problem solving, which have been tremendous assets to her role of overseeing the various elements of this production. Coming from a classical music background, Weng Yi also has solo, orchestral and string ensemble experience, and is interested in exploring different ways of creating and telling stories through the medium of music and theatre. Weng Yi is thrilled to be managing [title of show] and contributing to another one of Be You Inc’s projects. He brings a wealth of experience through his knowledge of music, his love of story, and his desire to make genuine connections with people. As the founder and CEO of Be You Inc, Bradley (he/they) is the artistic voice and vision behind its projects. He believes that storytelling is what brings people together through building empathy and understanding, and dreams of a world where everyone’s stories, no matter their background, are heard and validated. Bradley is an accredited coach, a member of the Diversity Council Australia, the Institute of Executive Coaching and Leadership, and is currently studying a Master of Social and Organisational Leadership with a specialisation in organisational coaching. “I’D RATHER BE NINE PEOPLE’S FAVOURITE THING THAN A HUNDRED PEOPLE’S NINTH FAVOURITE THING”

  • Cabaret Entree | Be You Inc

Be You Inc is running another cabaret competition, though this time we’re trying something a little different. Our “Cabaret Entree” is an opportunity for audiences to sample many different cabarets before deciding which will be further developed. It will consist of five finalists performing thirteen minute snippets of their proposed work to an audience including professional judges, who will decide on which finalist will be given the opportunity to have their cabaret idea produced by Be You Inc. The competition will take place in December 2019. How is the winner chosen? The winner will be chosen by a mixture of audience vote, professional feedback, and feedback from the Be You Inc team on how the finalist navigated the whole process. They will receive a fully workshopped and produced cabaret that will be performed during the Melbourne Cabaret Festival in 2020.

  • Get Involved | Broadway Unplugged

Get Involved We realise how difficult it can be to get your foot in the door to the professional industry, no matter how hard you try. As Broadway Unplugged is run by Be You Group - a charity that wishes to support the wider music theatre industry, we want to offer a few spots each month to up-and-coming aspiring professionals to join us on stage. Submit your Expression of Interest If you or someone you know would be interested in this opportunity, please fill out and send this form to us. We will get back to you if we have a spot for you and are inspired by your story. Use this opportunity to sell your passion to us! Talk yourself up! Please note that this form does not guarantee a spot in our show, but will provide a pool of performers on which to draw from. We wish to choose those who we believe could benefit the most from the opportunity at the time, and whose stories we would like to share. This list will be purged every four months to ensure we're seeing new applications, so please feel free to submit multiple times a year. Inclusion in our lineup is voluntary, as Broadway Unplugged's profits go towards Be You Group's charitable purposes.
