Join our Board
What if you could help shape the future of Australian musical theatre—while championing inclusion, mentorship and innovation?
Be You Group is seeking passionate, purpose-led individuals to join our Board. We’re a small but powerful team of creatives, educators, and community-builders, and we’re on a mission to centre values, voice and vision in the way artists work, grow and belong.

This is your invitation to join a team where your lived experience matters, your ideas are heard, and your leadership can directly shape the future of a thriving, artist-led movement.

Who are we?
Be You Group is a charity dedicated to creating a fairer, more inclusive musical theatre industry in Australia. We are home to a number of grassroots programs including:

-
Broadway Unplugged – a monthly performance platform supporting emerging and established artists alike
-
Be New – a lab for the development and showcasing of original Australian musical theatre
-
Be You Ed – educational initiatives including the “Maybe This Time” development intensive, grants, and outreach work
-
Be You Productions – staging works that reflect diverse, values-led storytelling
-
Be You Underground – a resource hub sharing audition briefs and insider info for performers and creatives
We are proud to offer paid opportunities for emerging artists, low-barrier access to resources, and programs grounded in transparency, collaboration and growth.

What kind of Board are we building?
We’re looking for people who bring a mix of:
-
Lived experience in the performing arts, education, community organising, or related fields
-
Skills or insight in leadership, HR, fundraising, policy, governance, or community engagement
-
A drive to take initiative and follow through — you’re the kind of person who sees potential and wants to make it happen
-
A love of big ideas, and a willingness to collaborate on practical solutions
-
A values-aligned mindset – you believe in care, inclusion, accountability, and doing things differently
No previous board experience is necessary—we’ll support you to grow into the role.

How does it work?
We meet monthly online and aim to keep our governance light-touch but effective. As a Board Member, you’ll have the opportunity to participate in Project-Based Portfolios, a unique model that allows you to step into a leadership space in one of Be You’s core program areas.

Each Portfolio role involves:
-
Policy guidance – helping set the strategic direction of a project or program
-
Participation – staying informed and connected to what’s happening on the ground
-
Quality assurance – ensuring our values are embedded in every step of delivery
-
Reporting – raising key issues to the broader Board and supporting continuous improvement
-
Innovation – contributing ideas for growth, iteration and transformation
Current Portfolios include:
🎠Productions
🎤 Broadway Unplugged
🌱 Be New (new works incubation)
📚 Be You Ed (Maybe This Time, Education Grants, Innovation)
💡 Be You Underground

You don’t need to take on a Portfolio to be a valued part of the team. General Board Members may contribute by supporting strategy discussions, participating in subcommittees, reviewing policies, offering insight and experience, or helping us build partnerships and capacity.

Time commitment is flexible, usually 2–5 hours a month depending on your level of involvement.
